Bringing the project home
After doing considerable research into what we wanted and how we wanted to go about it, it was time to find a suitable chassis for the project. We knew that we wanted a "link pin" style chassis to start with and that limited us to 1966 or earlier chassis. That of course meant that we would have to convert the rear suspension from "swingaxle" to "IRS" but we felt that would be easier than the alternative (converting an IRS/Ball Joint chassis to IRS/Link Pin). Being Volkswagen enthusiasts, we didn't want to cut up a rare or unique chassis for our project so we began looking for one that had already been cut into a "Baja" configuration. We soon found ourselves heading up to LA to pick up our project car. That was in May of 2007 and over the next few months, the project took shape. We completed the car in February of 2008, just in time for our first race - the 2008 SCORE San Felipe 250. The following pages show the process, from start to finish: |
